Interview with Tony Grey – author of ‘Paradise Mistaken

Question 1 - Why did you become a writer?

Answer - I’ve had the ambition to write a novel since I was a youngster. When I retired from my police career it seemed the right time to fulfil that ambition. Although it took a long time to get my work published – about 6 years - I’m glad I did it: it gives you a great sense of achievement to see your work eventually in print.

Question 2 – Why do you write crime novels?

Answer – Because they interest me and because, having been a police officer for 34 years, it’s the subject I know best. It’s always said that you should write about what you know. A lot of my professional experiences have given me ideas for the stories I write. Crime novels and films and television programmes about crime are perennially popular, so I guess it’s a good area to be involved in as a writer. There seems to be a constant need for good mysteries and thrillers.

Question 3 – Your novels are set in the Caribbean. Why?

Answer - For the last three years of my service I was a Commissioner of Police in a Caribbean territory. I lived, worked and travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean, as well as the USA and Central and South America, so I know it quite well. The Caribbean environment and culture is quite unique and a lot of people seem attracted by it. It seemed to me that it presented a great opportunity to write about something I knew in an area I was familiar with and which would, hopefully, be interesting to other people. The Caribbean experience helped me to look at things from a different perspective and try to write about it that way.

Question 4 – Why did you invent the island of Avariss as the setting for your novels?

Answer – In the Caribbean there are many separate islands and communities over a very wide area and each one has it’s own unique culture, customs, accent and attitudes. I wanted to reflect many of these in one location and it was therefore better for me to invent an island - Avariss – where I could bring things together in some way rather than base my stories in just one of the real islands. There are, of course, references to real places and other islands, but the invention of Avariss allowed me to use my imagination more extensively in progressing the stories in the way I wanted to.

Question 5 – Are any of your characters based on real people?

Answer – As it says on the copyright page, all my characters are fictitious but, for any writer, many of the people that you meet in real life will influence the qualities and attributes of the characters in your books. Sometimes real people (e.g. politicians or other well-known personalities) may be mentioned but what I say about them will be factual. Only my fictitious characters can lead fictitious lives!

Question 6 – You’ve written a sequel to Paradise Mistaken already. What’s that about, and when will it be published?

Answer – While Paradise Mistaken marks the beginning of Sam Dillon’s experiences in the Caribbean and tells the story of the hunt for a serial rapist, the sequel - A Body Politic – is a murder mystery. Dillon and his officers try to track down the murderer of a prominent politician and, inevitably, come up against all sorts of obstacles. It’s planned for publication later in 2007 and details will be released on my website.

Question 7 - Do you have plans for other books?

Answer – Yes, I plan to write a third book about Sam Dillon and his people. It will conclude the current series and make it into a ‘Caribbean Trilogy’. It will tie up all the loose ends left dangling from the first two! Then I have ideas for a completely different sort of novel – something more comic and amusing. But we’ll have to wait and see how that develops.

Question 8 – A final question – What’s the best way to obtain your books?

Answer – I have an excellent publisher (Trafford) who prints to order so, whether you want one book or a hundred, they’re printed on demand and delivered quickly. The quickest way to get them is to go to my website at www.antgrey.com and order direct from there. You can do it with a single click, going straight to Trafford’s website. My books are available worldwide and you can also obtain them online via Amazon, Waterstones and other sites as well as your local bookshop, but it will take a little longer for delivery.
If readers want a signed copy then they can write to me at:
